Bipartisan Senate Bill Doubles Hurricane Recovery Funding

Bipartisan Senate Bill Doubles Hurricane Recovery Funding”

The deal promises to speed a $7.9 billion Harvey aid bill, which passed the House Wednesday, to Trump's desk before disaster accounts run out later this week.

It's only the first installment of a federal aid package that could rival or exceed the $100 billion-plus provided after Hurricane Katrina. Watt's Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund has raised more than $18 million to date to help those affected by the storm. Hurricane Harvey devastated parts of Texas and other portions of the Gulf Coast region last week.

Said White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders, "We're a lot less focused on what makes Congress happy and [on] what makes Americans better and stronger".

Of course Hurricane Irma will be banging on Florida's door.

The language was unveiled late Wednesday night, hours after President Donald Trump stunned fellow Republicans by siding with Democrats over a short term increase in the federal debt limit; the bill includes that debt limit extension, and temporarily funds government operations.

Representative Mark Walker, chairman of the conservative Republican Study Committee, RSC, sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan on Thursday saying he opposed attaching the debt-ceiling raise to disaster aid. "Historically, the (short-term government funding) and debt ceiling have proven to be the only effective leverage for meaningful spending reform, and I believe we should continue to use them as tools to reduce our long-term debt".

There are 194 House Democrats and one open seat, meaning passage of the package could depend heavily on Democratic votes.
