Delta jet bound for NY flies through Hurricane Irma

Delta jet bound for NY flies through Hurricane Irma”

The Boeing 737 was reportedly full of passengers after leaving NY at 8.11am, according to FlightAware.

The flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 shared a radar image showing the plane heading into San Juan from NY just before noon Wednesday as the swirling storm was set to engulf the island.

Hurricane Irma has caused widespread destruction across the Caribbean, with the category five hurricane passing north of Puerto Rico.

A Delta Airlines flight from NY to Puerto Rico may go down in online folklore as one of the bravest, or foolhardiest, pieces of piloting after the crew competed with a Category Five hurricane to complete their scheduled return flight.

The flight returned to NY with 173 passengers at 4:22 p.m.

Several pictures that he posted showed the plane ascending from San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport - flying between the "outer band" of Irma and the "core" of the storm.

Images from live air traffic website flightradar24 help illustrate the incredible feat pulled off by everyone associated with Delta flights 431 and 302 on a day when other airlines couldn't land due to strong winds or turned back before reaching Puerto Rico.

Thousands of Twitter users followed along in real time thanks to Jason Rabinowitz, a self-proclaimed aviation fan who tweeted DL302's trajectory and shared remarkable photos of the flight taking on Irma's unsafe winds.

"This Delta flight was the last both in and out of SJU", Rabinowitz said. The airline credited its flight team and meteorology department for the successful flight, the Washington Post reported.

"Our meteorology team is the best in the business", Delta's Erik Snell told The Guardian.

The Delta crew were so confident in their abilities that they even bumped the return flight's departure time up by 25 minutes.
