Google appeals €2.4bn anti-trust fine over shopping service

Google appeals €2.4bn anti-trust fine over shopping service”

Alphabet will appeal the €2.9bn fine imposed by the European Commission in June, for abusing its market dominance in search.

The move sets up a court battle between Brussels and the internet giant that could take years to resolve and make already tense relations between Europe and the United States tech giant even more fraught.

The penalty comes after the competition referee launched an investigation into Google Shopping seven years ago, amid complaints it gave the service a prominent position on the internet search engine, while rival services were demoted.

Last week, for example, Intel won a partial victory after being granted a review by the European Court of Justice of an appeal against a €1bn antitrust fine levelled against it in 2009. But Google's "fix" - which turned search placements into a pay-to-play auction - appalled critics.

Google has already said it will comply with the changes to vertical search that Brussels requested, and has until September 27 to explain how it will put these into practice.

The battle between the European Union and Google extends over a seven-year period including a failed effort to settle the case.

The verdict came less than a year after Vestager shocked Washington and the world with an order that iPhone manufacturer Apple repay 13 billion euros in back taxes in Ireland - against Dublin's wishes.
