Gov. McMaster to announce final decision on state evacuations

Gov. McMaster to announce final decision on state evacuations”

He has scheduled another news conference at 6 p.m. Friday.

He says 2,400 National Guard soldiers and almost 2,800 state and local law enforcement officers are on duty awaiting potential orders.

"The decision on school closings will continue to be made by school districts themselves", he said.

Henry McMaster announced his decision on hurricane evacuations Friday evening.

McMaster did rescind the order for mandatory evacuations for healthcare facilities in the following counties: Horry, Georgetown, Berkley, Charleston and Dorchester.

Irma's path shifted west of SC over the past 24 hours.

SC evacuees might be running into those fleeing Florida and Georgia, states directly in Irma's path.

South Carolina's interstate system has seen an influx of vehicles during the past two days.

Hotel rooms are filling in central and western SC as Hurricane Irma approaches the United States.

Weather officials said a storm surge of 4-6 feet is expected along the southern coast of SC, and there will likely be trees and powerlines taken down by wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour.

At a late-morning briefing Wednesday, Gimenez said that the storm was slowing its pace a bit, giving authorities more time to set preparations in place. "All areas seeing heavy rainfall from Irma will experience a risk of flooding and flash flooding", the Hurricane said in its latest update.

"Irma is a strong storm".

Irma is expected to remain a category 5 hurricane until it slides between the Bahamas and Cuba, the interaction with the islands will cause It to weaken to a category 4.

The governor says forecasters westward shift of Irma's projected path added to the traffic, as Georgians are fleeing north, not west, "bringing them right up I-95".

McMaster says a change in Irma's track back east might require more evacuations.

Anticipated flight cancellations due to Hurricane Irma's proximity to Florida have started to impact travelers at Albany International Airport, airport officials said.
