Huge climate change discovery stuns scientists”

In a new find, researchers have revealed that climate change will kill almost one-third of all the parasite species from our planet earth in next five decade.

With climate change playing a major part, a new global analysis report claims that 33.33 percent of parasites will extinct in next 50 years. According to researchers from the Unversity of California, Berkley, manmade activities are creating ecological imbalance, and if it continues at a similar pace then several species of parasites like tapeworms, roundworms, ticks, lice, and fleas will go extinct from Earth. They contribute major role in controlling the population of wildlife, and they keep the energy flowing throughout the food chain. An existence of parasites indicates a good sign of stable ecosystem with the healthy diversity of animals and they are crucial elements of our ecosystem.

During their study to learn climate change effects over parasites population, the researchers found that 457 parasite species will be impacted by changes in climate under various scenarios. The research which was published in the Science Advances journal was executed with the aid of the US National Parasite Collection.

To find out how climate change is likely to affect the survival of a wide range of parasite species, researchers turned to museum collections – mainly the US National Parasite Collection at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a 125-year-old collection containing over 20 million organisms, which provides a broad and deep record of different species' occurrences around the world.

The study was completed with help from the U.S. National Parasite Collection, along with specialized information on fleas, ticks, bee mites and feather mites.

"Climate change will make some parasites extinct and make some do better". "As long as there are free-living organisms, there will be parasites". The most optimistic models predicted a loss of about 10 per cent. "But we would argue the overall phenomenon is risky, because extinctions and invasions go hand in hand", said Colin Carlson from the University of California Berkeley, lead author of the study.

Parasites need to be included in conversations about conservation, and this study highlights their delicate position in complex ecosystems, the scientists say.

"Parasites seem like one of the most threatened groups on Earth", Carlson told The Guardian.

"Parasites are obviously a hard sell", said Carlson.
