Mourinho confirms Lindelof will start in the Champions League

United face Swiss champions Basel at Old Trafford in their first game in Europe's top club competition for almost two years.

Defenders Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, who have started all four of United's Premier League games this season, are serving UEFA bans heading into the European campaign.

Chelsea, like United now, were the defending Europa League champions. "Every game is incredible for Manchester United for me but the Champions League is the most handsome competition apart from the Premier League". Basle have been Swiss champions for many years, they have a talented team. We have to respect them.

'We have to know where we come from, ' he said.

'Mistakes are part of the game, he's playing well for us, he's probably exhausted after two consequent matches with the national team. First aim we have is Basle. "We can not think of winning the Champions League now, we have to take it one step at a time".

The United legend told the Mail on Sunday ahead of an opening group stage clash with Basel on Tuesday: "It is highly unusual these days for a £75m striker not to have had previous experience and, if he wants to be considered world class, this is the stage where he has to prove himself". It was certainly the game of my career'.

"He's (Jones) playing well for us", Mourinho said. "He doesn't need me to go in to speak with him about it, so no problem", Mourinho explained, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. "Marcus [Rashford] will score, Anthony [Martial] is scoring, Juan [Mata] will score because it is in his DNA so we can not give all the responsibility to Romelu". It is important to have him though. We can not think of winning the Champions League now, we have to take it one step at a time.

"I think it will be fabulous for them and the fans to be back in the Champions League and to have the initial three matches to be played at Old Trafford, I think is fantastic".

Herrera was a consistently impressive presence in United's midfield, but the summer arrival of Nemanja Matic meant it was not until this weekend that he made his first Premier League start. "In football there are no surprises".
