Sixteen years today: Remembering the September 11 attacks”

Wellsville native Catherine Salter died in the World Trade Center collapse and former East Liverpool resident Lt. Col. David Scales was killed at the Pentagon.

A memorial service will be held at ground zero today where family members of the victims will read out the names of those who died.

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the horrific terrorist attacks on our country on September 11, 2001.

On that Tuesday in 2001 the extremist group al-Qaida attacked the United States by hijacking four airliners and crashing them.

At exactly 8:45 a.m., our national sense of security would be forever shattered when the first hijacked jetliner was flown into the World Trade Center by Islamic terrorists. As the world stood by in shock and looked at the horrifying sight; a second plane, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the second tower.

A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense) in Arlington County, Virginia, leading to a partial collapse of the building's western side. Al-Qaeda and bin Laden cited USA support of Israel, the presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia, and sanctions against Iraq as motives. Where were you when you heard the news, and what do you remember from that day?
