Tesla begins Supercharger network city expansion with Chicago and Boston

Tesla begins Supercharger network city expansion with Chicago and Boston”

The new Supercharger stations also have new physical designs that allow them to take up less space, which is obviously better for tight-packed parking spots common for cities.

After initially offering supercharger access as a free perk, Palo Alto, Calif. -based Tesla began charging a fee to any customer who purchased a vehicle after January 15 and exceeds a yearly limit of 400 kilowatt hours, or about 1,000 miles.

The first of Tesla's new urban stations to open for charging Monday will be a 10-stall location in Chicago and an eight-stall site in Boston, according to a company blog post.

The pricing will be the same as other Supercharging stations. The bulk of Superchargers are now along major highways at hotels and restaurants.

The bottom line is that for Teslas to fully take off, charging them has to be as convenient as pulling into a gas station to refuel.

It's using a new Supercharger design that Tesla has come up with for urban settings. Inside, there's a new 72 kilowatt architecture that delivers that full power to each auto connected.

The urban stations can deliver 72 kilowatts of power to each auto, so it will take 45 to 50 minutes for most drivers to fully charge their vehicles. That remains one of the key distinguishing features of electric vehicle ownership among the various automakers offering EVs and plug-in hybrids, but there had been concerns that, as the number of Tesla drivers increases rapidly with the more affordable Model 3 beginning production, the existing infrastructure might not keep up.

"As part of our commitment to make Tesla ownership easy for everyone, including those without immediate access to home or workplace charging, we are expanding our Supercharger network into city centers", Tesla said in a statement.

There's another big charging issue it'll help address, however.
