Trump tweets about DACA decision, says not to worry”

Politicians representing Brooklyn, a borough that makes up more than 30 percent of New York City's immigrant population, have mostly opposed Trump's DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) decision.

The announcement of the end of DACA had been made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Tuesday.

Trump is ending the Obama-era program that gave almost 800,000 immigrants temporary work permits and deportation protections.

Some immigration attorneys are going to be working long hours to help people in a soon-to-expire program that defers deportation for immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children.

According to the suit, the cost of rescinding the program would cost NY state upward of $38.6 billion over the next 10 years.

The Trump administration's announcement of an end to the programme has sparked nationwide protests, including in NY, where 70 people were arrested for acts of civil disobedience.

The lawsuit's plaintiffs were the states of New York, Massachusetts, Washington, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Virginia. California's attorney general, Xavier Becerra, said Tuesday that he would also sue to overturn Trump's order, but the state has not joined the NY lawsuit. The state attorney general, Xavier Becerra, said on Tuesday he was preparing to sue the Trump administration.

We call on all progressive lawyers, legal workers and activists to stand in solidarity with immigrants and undocumented people in their struggle to attain full citizenship and all its rights. "It's outrageous, it's not right..."

At the NY announcement, before the state attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, took the microphone, 23-year-old Zuleima Dominguez spoke to the assembled press. Trump's decision to end Daca was, he said, "cruel and unlawful".

DACA protects young immigrants brought to the United States illegally by their parents while they work or attend school. There's just one problem: "no court has ever ruled that is the case", he added.

With DACA or without DACA, we are immigrants, and we have fought hard in the United States, and we will continue to do so to improve our lives, said Mexican Norberto López, 23 years old and 22 as a resident in California state.

"You don't have the direct connection between the statements and the rescission of DACA" that existed in the travel ban, Gulasekaram said. "We won, plain and simple. What could be more cruel than that?"

Amazon says in its statement that at least nine of its employees are Dreamers, "and we believe, like most large USA companies, there are many more".

U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Manhattan-Greenpoint) also said that she believes the DREAM Act, as well as the BRIDGE Act, which would provide protection and work authorization to immigrants who meet certain qualifications, are "good places to start".

Nearly 800,000 Dreamers live in the U.S., 70% of them having arrived as children from Mexico with 90% having been born in Latin America.
