A Pizza Hut Manager Threatened Employees Evacuating Due to Hurricane Irma”

A Pizza Hut manager in Florida threatened to punish employees who missed shifts by evacuating too early for Hurricane Irma.

In the memo, the manager says workers are only allowed to evacuate 24-hours before the storm hit, and must return within three days of their evacuation.

The manager wrote workers at the Jacksonville restaurant have a "responsibility and commitment" to the community, and that employees who needed to evacuate would get only a 24-hour "grace period" before the storm. "In the event of an evacuation, you MUST return within 72 HOURS", it said.

The note went viral on social media and many criticized the company for risking its employees' lives.

The Pizza Hut notice spurred resentment on social media.

A rep for Pizza Hut did not respond to a request for comment.

The storm is not expected to arrive in Jacksonville, where this particular Pizza Hut is located, until Tuesday.

It also said if an employee skipped their shift, there would be documentation on their record showing they were a no-show.

A Pizza Hut spokesperson told Business Insider that one manager at a single location was responsible for the note, which violated the chain's guidelines. The spokesperson also specified that when the franchise group in charge of the location found out about the note, all employees at the location were contacted in order to make them understand the importance and emphasize that their health and safety were the top priority for the company.

Pizza Hut would not say whether the manager involved was disciplined, only saying the situation had been addressed.
