Damage assessment is underway at Port Everglades

Damage assessment is underway at Port Everglades”

Hurricane Irma, which has caused wind speeds of up to 130mph in the United States and the deaths of more than 30 people in the Caribbean and U.S., saw the closure of the Garden City, Ocean and Brunswick terminals by Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) last Saturday. "This led to outages at various gas stations throughout Florida and neighboring states, and it could take a week for supply conditions to return to normal".

Gas stations throughout Florida experience outages due to the huge spike in gasoline demand prior to the arrival of Irma.

"Refueling gas stations along major evacuation routes will be a top priority, as it was before the storm".

"Florida evacuees should plan their return home very carefully", AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said in a release. Expect congestion on the roadways, as the first few days after the storm will be the busiest.

Container traffic hit 3.66 million twenty-foot equivalent units in fiscal 2015, the second straight year the Port of Savannah has posted a record figure. Do not let your fuel gauge fall below a quarter tank before you start looking for a place to refuel.

Monday, however, dozens of tanker trucks were loaded with fuel that was stored at the port, and the process is continuing.

In the Peach State, the Georgia Ports Authority said the Ports of Savannah and Brunswick, which shut down on Saturday, will remain closed at least through Tuesday. "After the hurricane passes, we are committed to assessing any damage and getting our ports back up and running as quickly as possible".

These ports cannot reopen without passing inspection from the U.S. Coast Guard on all docks, facilities and ports. Harbor conditions are now being assessed before normal operations resume.

Port Tampa Bay: Minor damage and flooding.

The Coast Guard Port Survey Teams will conduct final port assessments and determine when ports are safe to resume operations. "Vessel operations may be impacted based on local conditions and U.S. Coast Guard actions, but this also has no impact on gate operations".
