Florida's Major Airports Assess Damage After Hurricane Irma

Florida's Major Airports Assess Damage After Hurricane Irma”

Orlando International Airport said they will also "phase-in limited commercial operations" beginning on Tuesday.

"Early indicates show minimal damage from (Hurricane Irma) at TPA", the airport tweeted on Monday morning.

The worst appears to be over, however, with Miami International Airport and Orlando International Airport both starting the cleanup process, and targeting Tuesday for reopening. The airport endured almost 100 miles per hour wind gusts and sustained significant water damage from Irma Sunday, according to Aviation Director and CEO Emilio Gonzalez.

"Some parts more than less", MIA Spokesman Greg Chin said.

Officials said some airlines were flying workers into MIA Monday in preparation for flights to resume.

However, even though the terminals will be open following damage assessments, there are still hundreds of canceled flights.

Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least two hours prior to your flight to allow extra time to get through the TSA checkpoint. The airport is now open for military and emergency flights.

The Category 4 hurricane with 130 miles per hour winds blew farther west than initially expected, inundating the Florida Keys and aiming for the west coast of the peninsula. The first scheduled flight is at 3:30 p.m. "Passengers reminded to check airline's flight status", according to the airport's Twitter feed.

Jacksonville International Airport is closed as the city is still dealing with heavy rains and flooding from Irma.

Airlines are preparing their recovery schedules, which may take several days to execute. South Florida airports can't say yet when they'll reopen.

Delta Airlines cancelled more than 800 flights due to Hurricane Irma, now a tropical storm blowing through Atlanta.
