Hurricane Irma: Cranes Collapse in Downtown Miami

Hurricane Irma: Cranes Collapse in Downtown Miami”

Florida Power and Light (FPL) estimates that 3.4 million Floridians could be without power during Hurricane Irma, which is now making its way toward the western portion of Florida.

Georgia Power spokeswoman Holly Crawford said Monday the areas with the most outages were Glynn and Chatham counties.

Hurricane Irma has weakened after cutting a path of destruction through the Caribbean and Florida, but it's still threatening more devastation as it heads toward Georgia.

Schools in the state planned to close Monday.

But Nelson warned there will be massive work ahead in the storm's aftermath.

Marietta could see between 3 and 5 inches of rain Monday, with wind speeds of 25 to 40 miles per hour and gusts surpassing 50 miles per hour.

Just as predicted, Irma on Saturday evening began making a wide right turn around the southern edge of Florida that could take it straight up the state's west coast.

A flash flood emergency was also issued for Charleston County in SC, which includes the city of Charleston, as the storm surge caused extensive flooding there. Its center hit portions of the Keys on Sunday but missed Miami and Naples, then skirted Tampa as the storm slowed. Some residents were trying to reach their homes by walking through floodwater up to their waists, while others used canoes.

Hours before monster storm Hurricane Irma hit Florida in the United States, many residents seemed to be under the impression that shooting bullets at the hurricane would be a good idea in an attempt to stop it.

At least five deaths have been blamed on the storm so far and 6 million people are without power.

Delta Air Lines (DAL) said Monday it has cancelled almost 900 flights, including many at its Atlanta hub, because of strong winds. He said 19,500 electric workers have been deployed in the restoration effort.

Numerous 4,000 or so people who spent the past two nights in the massive and crowded Germain Arena in this southwestern Florida town left at dawn Monday, only to find their cars flooded and the streets overfilled with water.

According to the PortMiami website, about 20 cruise lines have Miami as a home port or a port of call and many had to move ships out of the area and revise schedules.

Tampa has not been struck by a major hurricane since 1921, when its population was about 10,000, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen said.
