Hurricane Irma Threatens Over 10Mln Children in Caribbean Islands”

Irma cut a path of devastation across the northern Caribbean, leaving thousands homeless after destroying buildings and uprooting trees.

The loss of homes and livelihoods would only add to the woes of a country still reeling from devastating Hurricane Matthew less than a year ago.

It remains to be seen whether the Swiss aid delegation in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince will be reinforced with more humanitarian aid workers from the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation and the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unitexternal link.

"I get the sense that people here are used to hurricanes and no one seems frantically scared, but I've heard from many that some areas of the country haven't even fully recovered from Hurricane Matthew previous year - and now they're facing this", Escamilla said.

More than 5,500 people in the country were evacuated in the run-up to the storm, officials said.

"If you lose your documentation, you lose your land title, your birth certificate, all of these things. you've got nothing, and it will take a long time to get all that documentation back."
Oxfam has worked in the Caribbean region for over 30 years and has expert teams in providing safe water and carrying out sanitation and hygiene work for those people most vulnerable after an emergency strikes. The Caribbean country has been hit by a string of calamities in the past decade, including drought, a devastating natural disaster in 2010 and two hurricanes.

The Desir family wait next to their house as they prepare to go to a shelter to await the arrival of Hurricane Irma, in Cap-Haitien, on September 7, 2017. UNICEF's response to Hurricane Matthew Irma has turned into the most unsafe natural phenomenon of 2017, and is now stronger than Hurricane Matthew of last October, a category 4 hurricane, that battered South Haiti and Southeast Cuba. "We've heard that flooding is up to a meter high in poor neighborhoods".

Many schools and healthcare services have been disrupted by the worsening weather.

In Haiti, UN humanitarian staff have been deployed to the northern area of the island, which is likely to be hit.
