Indian Athlete Priyanka Panwar Banned for 8 Years by NADA”

Priyanka Panwar, a 2014 Asian Games women's relay gold medallist, has been slapped an eight-year ban for failing a dope test for the second time, sources close to the development here said on Monday.

Priyanka Panwar, a member of the 2014 Incheon Asiad women's 4x400m relay gold-winning team, has been handed an eight-year suspension by the NADA disciplinary panel.

The verdict of the NADA panel is based on the result of a test conducted on the athlete a year ago. The test result shows that she used banned substance mephentermine.

As per the NADA code, athletes caught for a second anti-doping rule violation get a sanction ranging from an eight-year to a lifetime ban.

Priyanka, along with five other athletes, had first tested positive for anabolic steroids in dope tests conducted in 2011. The latest test results by NADA also show that use of banned drugs continues unchecked in the country as almost 40 sportspersons have failed dope tests this year. For the second time, she got positive result during the National inter-state athletics competitions in 2016.

Priyanka pleaded before the disciplinary panel that since she had consumed medicines prescribed by a qualified doctor and checked with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) list of prohibited substances her case be treated under the "No fault or Negligence" clause. Finally, the National Dope Testing Laboratory director Said, "She has taken mephentermine directly not through the mucaine gel".

We all know that Maria Sharapova a Russian Athlete banned in 2016 for two years for using the banned substance. But later reduced to 15 months.
