May pleads with Trump to help save British jobs”

The CSeries project supports hundreds of jobs in Belfast.

United Kingdom prime minister Theresa May also raised the issue in a call earlier this month to USA president Donald Trump, after Boeing complained earlier this year that Bombardier was dumping passenger jets on the U.S. market. In 2016, Canadian firm Bombardier won an order to supply up to 125 CSeries passenger jets to U.S. airline Delta.

May had a phone call with Trump last week in which she pleaded with the President to intervene in a legal battle between two rival aircraft manufacturers which threatens to destroy thousands of jobs in Northern Ireland.

American aircraft manufacturer Boeing has accused rival Bombardier of receiving unfair state support and a ruling in the U.S. this month could doom its Belfast factory. It could hit Bombardier with punitive tariffs.

This has led the British prime minister raising the issue in a call with Trump on 5 September, BloombergPolitics reported which followed the intervention of Democratic Unionist Party leader Arlene Foster, the Times reported.

"This is a commercial matter but the United Kingdom government is working tirelessly to safeguard Bombardier's operations and its highly skilled workers in Belfast", the spokesman added.

Bombardier said: "We are very confident the United Kingdom government understands what is at stake and will take the actions necessary to respond to this direct attack on its aerospace industry". "Our priority is to encourage Boeing to drop its case and seek a negotiated settlement with Bombardier", a United Kingdom government spokesman said in a statement.

Business Secretary Greg Clark went to Chicago to meet Boeing's chairman, president and chief executive officer, Dennis Muilenburg.

Bombardier management in Belfast are also understood to have recently briefed trade unions about the importance of the case.

Boeing has alleged that Bombardier sold 75 aircraft for nearly $14m (£10.6m) below cost price. May pledged to give the Northern Irish party £1 billion in exchange for a "confidence and supply" deal where the DUP's 10 MPs will back the government on key legislation.

Mrs May's call to the United States president was described as constructive by officials at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
