'Monster fatberg' clogs up Whitechapel sewer

'Monster fatberg' clogs up Whitechapel sewer”

"This fatberg is up there with the biggest we've ever seen", said Matt Rimmer, Thames Water's head of waste networks.

Thames Water has warned that washing oil, fats and grease down the sink, and flushing wipes, cotton buds, sanitary products and condoms down the loo, can all lead to blockages.

A grotesque and gargantuan fatberg has been discovered under the streets of London. A recycling site in Stratford. Parking bays have had to be cordon off while engineers get access to the sewer beneath the surface.

The stomach-churning contents include discarded wet wipes, nappies, fat and oil - in a congealed mass which weighs 130 tons.

'Often we have to shut roads entirely, which can cause widespread disruption - especially in London'.

CCTV camera inspections showed the sewer to be completely blocked by the fatberg which is 3.5 metres below ground.

The company says fatbergs form when people put things down sinks and toilets that they shouldn't. It also visited food outlets earlier this year to discuss how they dispose of fat and food waste.

Matt said: 'When it comes to preventing fatbergs, everyone has a role to play.

"The sewers are not an abyss for household rubbish and our message to everyone is clear - please 'Bin it - don't block it"'.

The crew are removing around 20 to 30 tonnes every shift, with work starting at 8am and continuing until 5pm seven days a week.

The Whitechapel fatberg is blocking a stretch of Victorian sewer more than twice the length of two Wembley football pitches and is around 10 times bigger than the famous Kingston fatberg found in 2013. It is a similar story for other water companies across the UK.
