Poll results likely to be delayed, DU may move HC

Poll results likely to be delayed, DU may move HC”

From the 51 colleges whose students elect the DUSU, the percentage of voting in 32 institutions where votes had been counted was 44 per cent, Chief Election Officer S.B. Babbar told IANS, while the counting at nine colleges remains to be done. The University will announce the date, time and venue for counting of votes later.

"The result for the post of the President be declared as per schedule". The voting for morning students is open from 8.30am to 1pm while the evening classes students will get chance to vote from 3pm to 7.30pm.The candidates have been campaigning long and hard, with posters plastered across nearly every inch of the campus, and have been looking at issues such as transportation and accommodation. But, this time, besides the run of the mill issues, ideological matters will also come into play in the backdrop of the violence at Ramjas where the Left-leaning student outfits clashed with the RSS-backed ABVP.The major players in the fray include the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Congress' student outfit National Students Union of India.

The DU in its application asked the court to permit it to declare the result of all candidates as scheduled subject to the final outcome of the Tuseed's petition.

"The petitioner (Tuseed) is permitted to participate in the election of the DUSU for the post of President".

South and North MCD said it has put up efforts to remove the posters and banners of the student political outfits.

The university, however, said that once counting is done, the results can not be kept in a sealed cover.

As voting is done using EVMs it is not possible to complete counting, excluding the post of DUSU president, the poll panel of DU had said.

The court noted that the plea was not opposed by Rocky Tuseed's counsel.

The High Court had earlier posed searching questions to Delhi University for rejecting the nomination of the Congress-affiliate NSUI's presidential candidate. The High Court also pulled up the Delhi Police for not taking action or arresting the violators for the offence of defacing public properties which attracts a maximum jail term of 10 years.

"The petitioner says he was warned by Shivaji College and it was not a disciplinary action which this court is finding to be true".

Delhi University in the previous elections had also introduced the option of NOTA which was preferred by many students. The petition was opposed by Delhi University saying it was not maintainable and the university has been wrongly made a party.
