Renault unveils new Megane RS hot hatchback

Renault unveils new Megane RS hot hatchback”

The all-new Renault Sport Megane RS has been revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

As far a number crunching goes, we can tell you under the hood of the Megane RS lies dormant a new 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline direct injection engine, instead of the older two-liter turbo - directly taken from the Alpine A110 sports auto.

Customers will be able to choose between either a six-speed manual gearbox, or a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

All cars get hydraulic bump stops, as well as "4Control" all-wheel steering, which sees the rear wheels angle in the opposite direction to the fronts at lower speeds to help agility, while adding stability at higher speeds by turning the rears in the same direction. The standard auto makes do with an open differential, but if you spec the more focused "Cup" chassis, you get a Torsen limited-slip differential.

The hot hatch is based on the stand Megane but has a body that's 60mm wider at the front and 45mm wider at the rear.

Pleasingly for enthusiasts, including the large Aussie contingent or Renault Sport enthusiasts, the new Megane RS does not depart as drastically from its iconic predecessor as the Clio RS did back in 2013.

Drivers can select from five driving modes - Comfort, Normal, Sport, Race and Perso - and there's an R.S. Monitor that allows drivers to film their drive and analyse data later.

An even more powerful Trophy version of the Megane RS will be available by the end of 2018, which will produce 296bhp and 400Nm of torque. In addition, safety is ensured by a wide range of assistance systems - such as adaptive cruise control with active emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot warning, reversing camera, and park assist - first orders for the new Megane RS will be taken by Renault in Europe starting early next year.
