South Korea deploys U.S. anti-missile launchers amid protests

South Korea deploys U.S. anti-missile launchers amid protests”

Seoul's Defense Ministry on Wednesday said the USA military will begin adding more launchers to a contentious high-tech US missile defense system in South Korea on Thursday to better cope with North Korean threats.

On Sunday, North Korea said it detonated a hydrogen bomb designed for a long-range missile and called its sixth and most powerful nuclear test a "perfect success", sparking world condemnation and promises of tougher USA sanctions.

Moon ordered the temporary deployment of the remaining THAAD elements, specifically four remaining US anti-missile THAAD system launchers created to protect against mounting threats from North Korea.

Putin says he believes President Donald Trump's administration is willing to defuse tensions over North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

From September 6 to 7, the Russian port city of Vladivostok hosts the EEF, gathering over 3,500 participants from more than 50 countries. Putin expressed concern that cutting off oil supplies would hurt regular North Koreans, Yoon said.

"We should not give in to emotions and push Pyongyang into a corner", Putin said in a news conference after meeting with Moon. Abe is due to meet Putin separately later today.

Protesters scuffled with armored riot police as they attempted to block the road where US Forces Korea were transporting four additional THAAD missile interceptor launchers to a base in Seongju, around 186 miles south of Seoul. Six police officers and 32 other people were injured, none seriously, in the clashes, said a fire department official in Seongju who spoke on condition of anonymity, citing office rules.

Two launchers have been operational at the site since May, CNN reported.

Opposition to THAAD has been fierce both within South Korea and without.

Moon had urged Moscow to support stronger sanctions against North Korea, which conducted its sixth nuclear test on Sunday in what it claimed was a detonation of a thermonuclear weapon built for missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland. With the North Korean regime under its leader Kim Jong-un barreling ahead like a locomotive with no brakes, there is skepticism about whether there's any point in talking about "dialogue" when there is no response from the North Defense Minister Song even told the National Assembly that "redeploying tactical nuclear weapons is an option that ought to be considered as one of the various ways of effectively countering and deterring the threat of North Korean nuclear weapons, even though it contradicts government policy".

They also pledged to strengthen joint military capabilities.
