State puts pot shops on notice ahead of board meeting”

LARA will issue emergency rules to render such businesses "a potential impediment" to its license plan.

The state hopes to issue licenses sometime in the first quarter of next year.

Brisbo said the bureau will give the board its recommendation on how to proceed with dispensary shops.

UPDATE (11:20 a.m.) - The state Medical Marijuana Licensing Board will not vote today to shut down dispensaries statewide ahead of a new licensing law taking effect in December.

News 10's Rachael Schuit is following this story and will have all the answers tonight at 6 o'clock.

This would mean that to be eligible for new licenses existing Medical Marijuana Dispensaries would need to shut down by a certain date and apply for a new license under the new system.

An Iowa agency has been advised to halt implementation of a small section in the state's new medical marijuana law amid legal concerns it could invite scrutiny from the federal government.

Local officials are beginning to decide if they want medical marijuana businesses in their communities before the state starts giving out licenses next year. In the meantime, some board members have signaled that existing dispensaries should have to close in order to qualify.

Two members of the five-member licensing board - chairman Rick Johnson, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, and retired Michigan State Police officer Don Bailey - have said that they want now operating dispensaries to shut down until the state begins handing out licenses sometime next year.

As of 2016, there were 218,556 medical marijuana card-holders in the state of MI.
