Thousands of flights canceled as Irma targets Atlanta

Thousands of flights canceled as Irma targets Atlanta”

The company says it is working closely with local authorities to determine airport conditions and ramp up flights in cities impacted by the hurricane. The airport, through its Twitter feed, is urging customers to check with their airline for more details.

"We're monitoring and tracking Hurricane Irma", said Andrew Gobeil, a spokesperson for the airport. The airport will not reopen on Monday.

Miami International Airport was forced to cancel all flights on Monday, according to a post on social media by the airport's main account.

A wind gust at the Naples Municipal Airport measured 142 miles per hour. Delta said Sunday it was tentatively restarting Florida service Monday, pending an assessment of infrastructure damage.

CNN reported the airport had sustained "significant water damage throughout".

Jacksonville International Airport is closed as the city is still dealing with heavy rains and flooding from Irma.

Delta has announced it is also adding an additional flight from Atlanta to San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday, to "assist Caribbean recovery efforts".

Officials from Southwest Airlines has canceled flights to and from Atlanta starting at 1 p.m. on Monday.

Delta said it was concerned that the airport's runways may experience strong crosswinds from the storm that will exceed operating limits for some of its planes.

"A slight crosswind is allowable and can be safely managed, but a 40 miles per hour or greater crosswind, as the storm is expected to bring in Atlanta, may exceed allowable limits". Those traveling via American Airlines are encouraged to only go to the airport if they have a confirmed ticket and their flight status shows "on time".
