UN passes new sanctions on North Korea

UN passes new sanctions on North Korea”

On Monday, the USA circulated a draft resolution that called for a full ban on exports of oil to North Korea and an asset freeze on leader Kim Jong Un, the Worker's Party and the government of North Korea.

More modifications are inevitable and it's unclear if a vote will take place Monday as the United States has sought, the diplomat said.

The deal, which came about under former President Barack Obama and saw Germany, the U.S., France, China and Russian Federation unite to end a potentially risky defense program, lifted sanctions on the Middle Eastern power in exchange for reducing its use of nuclear materials and equipment for 10 years or more.

The negotiations reflect differences among the world's top powers over the best way to halt Kim's push for a nuclear weapon that can target the United States homeland.

Peru's foreign ministry statement said the decision was made given North Korea's "repeated and flagrant violation" of previous UN Security Council resolutions, which "constituted a serious and unacceptable threat to worldwide peace and security, as well as stability in northeast Asia and in the world".

The Reuters news agency reported Monday that the sanctions had been softened to appease China and Russian Federation, citing diplomats. "The forthcoming measures to be taken by the DPRK will cause the USA the greatest pain and suffering it had ever gone through in its entire history", the statement read.

Despite the rhetoric, there was a sign both sides are looking for a diplomatic solution.

The US had initially sought the implementation of stronger measures against North Korea, including bans on oil imports, textile exports and employing guest workers from the isolated nation.

(KOREAN ed: steve) North Korea must acknowledge that its reckless assault on world peace will only bring about more powerful sanctions. In addition, Seoul's Unification Ministry warned Pyongyang to stop its provocative actions as they should understand the sanctions will ultimately hurt the North Korean people.
