Winston Reid high boot on Steve Mounie: Red card debate goes on

Winston Reid high boot on Steve Mounie: Red card debate goes on”

The 21-cap global wore the captain's armband as West Ham United scored two second half goals to beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 to record their first win of the English Premier League season on Tuesday morning (NZT).

All Whites defender Winston Reid has reopened a debate among football fans over the ruling of endangering players after he kicked Huddersfield striker Steve Mounie's face in West Ham's 2-0 Premier League win this morning.

His show of leniency produced a backlash among Liverpool supporters on social media as they pointed out that Jon Moss had shown a red card to Sadio Mané for his studs-up tackle on Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson barely a day earlier.

Neville, who was co-commentating for Sky Sports during the match, disagreed with the decision to send Mane off and he claimed during the broadcast that the challenge was a "yellow at best".

"What I would say is he's not flying through the air like Karate Kid like Mane was and like Ritchie was".

The win eases some of the pressure on West Ham manager Slaven Bilic after three straight losses - all coming away from home - while the London Stadium reverted to being a soccer venue after hosting the world athletics championships.

The Senegal global had his eyes on the ball the entire time, but his high boot endangered the safety of his opponent, which according to the rules, constitutes as serious foul play.

"He could have done anything, caught him in the eye, could have split his eye open".

West Ham went on to win the match with goals to Pedro Obiang and Andre Ayew in the final 18 minutes.
