At least 10 dead in Cuba from Irma

At least 10 dead in Cuba from Irma”

Before and after satellite images reveal the devastation Hurricane Irma left behind in its wake last week when it was a monster Category 5 storm that churned over several Caribbean islands. Witnesses said a provincial museum near the eye of the storm was in ruins.

"Given the immensity of its size, practically no region escaped its impact", Cuban President Raul Castro said in a statement published in state-run media on Monday.

Fatalities also were reported in Matanzas, home to the tourist resort of Varadero, and the regions of Ciego de Avila and Camaguey farther east.

Castro said authorities had not been able to assess the full extent of damage yet, but the hurricane had impacted housing stock and the power grid, as well as agriculture. Many residents had stayed put, hoping to ride out the storm.

There were no confirmed casualties in Cuba from Irma.

Photos from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on the Landsat 8 satellite show some of Irma's effect on the British and U.S. Virgin Islands from space.

Barbuda, Anguilla, the Virgin Islands, and Cuba were hit by the worst of the storm, with some islands reporting that 90% of their structures were damaged or destroyed.

Dutch authorities are evacuating other tourists and injured people to Curacao, where Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk were expected to arrive on Monday.

Marlin said many countries and people have offered help to St. Maarten, but authorities were waiting on the weather conditions to see how it could be coordinated.

The U.S. State Department helped more than 500 Americans fly out of St. Martin, starting with those in need of urgent medical care, spokeswoman Heather Nauert said.

That included about 4,000 from low-lying districts and tourist hotels around the capital. "I didn't think I was going to make it".

Barbuda was the first island in the Caribbean to feel the wrath of Irma.

The difference between the northern island of Barbuda and the southern island of Antiqua reveals the difference Irma made.
