Bears Little Man Cohen Has Big Debut

Bears Little Man Cohen Has Big Debut”

He still talks to us every day.

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox said that quarterback Mike Glennon, "operated the team well", in a 23-17 loss to the Atlanta Falcons in Week 1.

The Bears kept their plan for Cohen out of the public eye in August, not targeting him during preseason games and only giving him one carry in their Week 3 dress rehearsal against the Tennessee Titans.

The 5-foot-6, 181-pound Cohen compiled 113 total yards and a touchdown in his National Football League debut while serving as the team's "joker" back, and his ability to make tacklers miss wowed outsiders and teammates alike. "Just overcoming that, it's really nothing to me now". I've been watching him for a month-and-a-half.

And he didn't surprise anyone at A&T, either. The running back, [Jordan Howard], that we played previous year had two runs over 10 yards that I can recall off the top of my head. This kid is unbelievable. "And we ended up offering him a scholarship and he signed and the rest is history".

It's important to note that receiving backs like Cohen tend to be volatile on a weekly basis even if the final season numbers look good. He ran with speed and elusiveness, and he showed elite instinct. After getting around the edge on his backfield pursuers, the rookie back shot through several defender at the line of scrimmage and broke out for a 46-yard gain to the Atlanta 22.

Cohen creates mismatches for defenders.

"(The Falcons) have a very fast defense, and I beat them on the first toss (sweep) and got outside", Cohen told the gathered media.

"The handsome thing is Trufant couldn't really get up on him because he was afraid that Tarik was going to make a move", Hicks said. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers hit wide receiver Jordy Nelson on a 60-yard deep ball down the middle which led to a game-winning field goal by kicker Mason Crosby.

With the ball in his hands as a punt returner, runner and receiver, Cohen's 158 all-purpose yards - five rushes for 66 yards, eight receptions for 47 yards and three punt returns for 45 yards - set a franchise debut record. But we now know why Matt Ryan has been talking up sophomore TE Austin Hooper. So we scrambled around and found a place to watch it.

And he's a diplomat. While second-overall pick Mitchell Trubisky waits for his chance behind Mike Glennon and small-school pick Adam Shaheen (eight snaps in Week One) fights for playing time among a deep group of tight ends, one Chicago rookie has already made a big impact on the Bears' offense. Cohen was lined up in the gun and asked to read the backside end on a zone-read play, which he did. And he gave a pro's answer. He's a playmaker and we're lucky to have him. The (offensive coordinator) has confidence in everybody else on this team, just as he has confidence in myself.
