Black Lives Matter, Group Covers UVA Jefferson Statue, Lists Demands”

Jefferson was attacked on Tuesday night by Black Lives Matter-aligned protesters, who complained that his legacy was "fetishized" by people who condemned the neo-Nazi protests in Charlottesville last month.

University of Virginia president Theresa Sullivan responded to a Tuesday night student protest that covered a statue of Thomas Jefferson, the university's founder, in a black tarp and labeled him a "racist" and "rapist".

Almost 89 percent of respondents thought the "Unite the Right" rally had "gone too far", while "over half" believed UVA President Teresa Sullivan should have more explicitly condemned the participants.

On the ground, members of the group read a list of demands following white supremacists events in Charlottesville this summer.

The protest of Jefferson's statue is yet another wedge between conservatives who say American history is being erased or rewritten and the critics of such landmarks who say they memorialize men in history who owned slaves or fought to maintain slavery. Trump drew a line between those landmarks and others of founding fathers like President George Washington and Jefferson.

About 62 percent of students, meanwhile, agreed with the city's decision to remove the equestrian statue of Robert E. Lee, and 67 percent approved of the decision to rename "Lee and Jackson Parks to Emancipation and Justice Parks". "You know, you really do have to ask yourself, where does it stop?"

The protesters who came out on Tuesday, braving the rain, said they were speaking out against the university's response to those and other white nationalist demonstrators, the Daily Progress reports.

Sullivan further praised Jefferson as "an ardent believer in freedom of expression", who "experienced plenty of abusive treatment from the newspapers of his day". John Whitbeck, the chairman of the state's Republican Party, called the protest a "vandalism and attempt to erase history by the left".

"The statue of Jefferson serves as an emblem of white supremacy". "I strongly disagree with the protesters' decision to cover the Jefferson statue".
