California restaurant employee tried to flush newborn down toilet: prosecutors”

A Redwood City woman is facing attempted murder charges after she allegedly gave birth to a child in the restroom of a Redwood City McDonald's restaurant and attempted to flush the child down a toilet last week, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Sarah Lockner, 25, was working the night shift on September 4 when she complained of stomach pain and repeatedly used the restroom. According to the Daily Journal, Lockner stayed back even after her manager suggested she could go home.

Two female employees went to check on Lockner and found her inside a stall, surrounded by a pool of blood.

A female employee looked over the cubicle and saw Lockner holding a newborn baby in the toilet, it reports. If convicted, she could face a life sentence.

When the worker stepped down to go alert someone she heard the toilet flush and Lockner asked her not to call police.

The worker immediately told the boss, who called the cops. When police and paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the baby was not breathing and they could not find a pulse.

Doctors initially didn't think the baby would survive, but the child was taken off life support and has been improving.

Prosecutors also said that the baby's mother claimed that she didn't know she was pregnant. It is not yet known if he has sustained any brain damage.

Lockner is being charged with attempted murder, causing great bodily injury and assault on the child causing great bodily injury.

Child Protective Services is determining if there are any family members who could take the baby after the child is released from the hospital.

She remains in custody on $11 million bail, with her next court appearance scheduled for September 18. When the baby did not cry, she assumed it was a still-born and attempted to flush it. Hospital employees later found the baby in a pillowcase in the trash can.
