Clinton 'dumbfounded' by Comey letter days before election”

"I thought what is he doing ... the investigation is closed", Clinton said about Comey's October 28 letter that reintroduced his agency's probe of her emails.

"I was just dumbfounded". "It became clear this was not necessary, he could have called me up".

Lauer, though, hinted at criticisms of Clinton in an early interview question to her. "People are using words to describe this book that they don't normally use in association with you: 'unrestrained, ' 'very candid.' People saying you've taken your political straightjacket and been unleashed a little bit to say what you really want to say", Lauer said.

Comey's decision to reopen to probe has been credited as one of many factors that contributed to Donald Trump's surprise win in November. Never mind the fact that Hillary had been hiding the e-mail system itself for six years until the Benghazi select committee discovered it, or that her attorneys deleted more than half of the e-mails from the records before turning the data files over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation - or that it took months and a subpoena before they got access to the systems themselves.

Clinton also said Comey's intervention played a major role in the outcome of the election.

Meanwhile, the White house weighed in Tuesday on Clinton's book, with Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders calling Trump's 2016 rival "sad". "But I would think that he's pretty well-versed on what happened", Sanders said.

"Getting to the bottom of this - which I hope everyone agrees we must - if I had been elected and this had come to light, if I had known once I walked into the Oval Office what we now know, I would have stopped at nothing to make sure this never happened again to anybody".

"As I write in the book and I could have put much more into the book, and independent observers like Nate Silver and others say, yes, but for that intervention I would have won", she explained. "Have at it", she continued.
