Dalai Lama: Buddha would have helped Rohingyas

Dalai Lama: Buddha would have helped Rohingyas”

Her remarks come as the United Nations estimates some 370,000 Rohingya have now fled violence in Rakhine state.

A British aid worker in southern Bangladesh has said smoke from burning villages is blackening the horizon as hundreds of thousands of the ethnic minority Rohingya flee violence in Burma.

Attacks by Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) militants on police posts and an army base in the northwestern state of Rakhine on August 25 provoked a military counter-offensive.

On September 5, Rijiju had said the government had set up a task force in various states to identify and deport Rohingya refugees in India. Others estimate it to be in the region of 1,000.

She reiterated her called to the worldwide community to mount pressure on the Myanmar government so that its army stop the atrocity, they take the Rohingya back to their home and treat as Myanmar citizen with all the rights they are entitled.

Western critics have accused Myanmar leader Aung San Suu Kyi of failing to speak out for the Rohingya, who are despised by many in the country as illegal migrants from Bangladesh. "We can cooperate to rehabilitate them in their country".

"The military and the vigilantes came and started shooting in our village", a woman named Diljar told Britain's Channel 4 News, as she held her 8-week old baby.

She said her country would offer Rohingyas shelter until Myanmar took them back.

It is still not clear who is responsible for the placing of landmines, or when they were laid, but the issue raises uncomfortable questions for the Myanmar government. "We call on Burmese security authorities to respect the rule of law, stop the violence, and end the displacement of civilians from all communities", they said in a statement.

Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, accused Myanmar authorities of acting in a "clearly disproportionate" manner, "without regards for basic principles of global law", on Monday. "Many new arrivals are still on the move and residing on the roadsides, and are left out of the calculations due to the lack of comprehensive tracking mechanism", said a United Nations coordination report yesterday.

"As a fellow Buddhist and Nobel laureate I am appealing to you and your colleagues once more to find a lasting and humane solution to this festering problem", he wrote. Around 148 countries have signed either of the two protocols which clarify the rights of refugees and help protect them.

"The operation (by the Myanmar government against militants).is clearly disproportionate and without regard for basic principles of worldwide law", Mr Zeid noted. Total number of refugees entering Bangladesh since October 2016, has risen to more than 450,000.

"New arrivals in all locations are in urgent need of life-saving assistance, including food, water and sanitation, health and protection".

But the plan was apparently shelved past year amid reports that the silt island, which only emerged from the sea in 2006, was unhabitable due to regular tidal flooding.
