Damp, Dark and Disarrayed, Florida Starts Coping With Irma's Aftermath

Damp, Dark and Disarrayed, Florida Starts Coping With Irma's Aftermath”

Strong river flooding is possible over the next five days in much of central Georgia and southern SC.

Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane in the tropical Atlantic (7.5-20 degrees North, 60-20 degrees West) since Hugo in 1989. Everyone fears that Irma's intense winds might drive high, pounding seas up onto land, where they could wreak destructive havoc with cars, houses - really everything. It flooded streets and coastal areas, swamped homes, uprooted massive trees, cast boats ashore, snapped power lines and toppled construction cranes. In a parting blow to the state before pushing on to Georgia and beyond, the storm caused record flooding in and around Jacksonville, causing untold damage and prompting dozens of rescues.

"Most of us are surfers and former skaters who don't skate anymore because we're too old, but for this moment we get to be kids again", said Spagnuolo.

Bill Karins, a NBC News meteorologist, highlighted that Naples reported only around 6 feet of storm surge on Sunday night.

Across the Caribbean, hard-hit island residents struggled to get back on their feet as Britain, France, the Netherlands and the United States increased relief efforts.

Communication has been cut to some of the Keys, AP reports. On its Twitter account, the sheriff's office said it hopes "people who had their lives saved yesterday will take evacuation orders seriously in the future". Nearly every mobile home park in the Keys had overturned homes, according to the governor.

Senterfitt told a teleconference a large airborne relief operation was being prepared by the Air Force and Air National Guard to take help to the chain of islands, which are linked by a dramatic series of bridges and causeways from Key Largo nearly 100 miles (160 km) southwest to the picturesque town of Key West.

The tropical storm will now move through Alabama and Georgia before making its way up into Tennessee and the Carolinas, before finally fizzling out.

One man was found dead in his crashed auto on the Keys and two law enforcement officers died in a possibly storm-related fatal vehicle crash on Sunday in Orange County, Florida. Meanwhile, heavy equipment was seen moving to clear road debris in Florida as chain saws whirred and cleanup crews fanned out.

"This is a big warning already, when you know that climate change is getting more and more cruel", said Francisco Garcia, coach of Cuba's national karate team, whose home was damaged by Irma.

"HELP IS ON THE WAY", they promised on Facebook. Evacuees Of The Keys shared school closure notices, videos of destruction, and many posts from friends and relatives searching for loved ones.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture said its latest monthly crop report, a focus for farmers and commodity traders, doesn't fully reflect damage from hurricanes Harvey and Irma, and the agency plans to survey harvests later this month.

Irma continues to sustain 50 miles per hour winds and stronger gusts, but is expected to be downgraded to a tropical depression as it moves into Alabama on Tuesday. We had a buddy who had a (Ford) Bronco parked right outside the house - he had water in his ashtrays.

Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia in West Point, Georgia, has canceled vehicle production on Monday and Tuesday for all three shifts due to Irma, a company official said. Sea World and Busch Gardens Tampa Bay said Monday that they are assessing damage and would announce their reopening plans later.
