Day After Ouster From AIADMK, Dinakaran Removes EPS From Party Post”

With the Election Commission still to give its verdict in the symbol allotment case, the ruling faction has come up with an interesting way to deny the position of general secretary to Sasikala and deputy general secretary to her protégé Dhinakaran.

Minutes after the resolutions were passed Dinakaran held a press conference in Madurai and said that the general council meet was itself of no outcome as it has been challenged in the courts and unless a verdict in the case comes out during the end of October, none of the resolutions passed in this meeting will be binding on the party.

The new method of electing the coordinator and the co-cordinator has apparently been implemented in the light of the controversy that arose over the appointment of V.K. Sasikala as interim general secretary.

Sasikala had appointed Dinakaran as Deputy General Secretary before going to jail. The council also ratified the recent merger of the two factions led by Palaniswami and Panneerselvam. One of the basic demands of Panneerselvam camp for the merger with Palaniswami was the dismissal of Sasikala and her family members from the party.

Several bylaws governing the AIADMK were amended by the general council of the AIADMK (Amma, PTA) on Tuesday. "The General Council unanimously approves this", another resolution said.

A combative Dhinakaran sought to play down the decision to annul the appointment of his aunt, indicating that the court could have a final say on the matter. The General Council also decided that party Coordinator (now held by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam) and Joint Coordinator (held by Chief Minister K Palaniswami) will oversee the party affairs. Sasikala's removal may not end the protracted political crisis in the ruling AIADMK that began soon after Jayalalithaa's demise previous year as the dispute over her appointment is still pending with the Election Commission. In the meanwhile, they will continue to try and wean away the 19 legislators who are with Dhinakaran. The general council has decided to make the late Jayalalithaa the "eternal" general secretary. Even though only two days had gone after Stalin's meeting with the Governor, the party does not see any reason to wait for the ultimatum to expire, since Dhinakaran had made it clear that he would go all out to bring down the government.
