Flames no longer looking for new arena in Calgary: Ken King

Flames no longer looking for new arena in Calgary: Ken King”

King did say they'd still do everything possible to be provide the best possible entertainment value they could in the Saddledome.

According to Sportsnet, the Flames' initial stadium proposal was a $890 million hockey/football facility called CalgaryNEXT, but the team only would've footed $200 million of the bill.

"I don't know what the long term future holds but I know that these are people who, had been over the years, and we went through hard times 15, 20 years ago, that have hung on but I think that there's a resignation that there's no ability to get a new building in this market so they're going to stop trying", said NHL Commissioner, Gary Bettman.

"The building is very important".

King says he spoke with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi on Monday evening and that it is clear that the two sides don't have the same vision. The reason we had the meeting today is that the mayor's campaign seemed to kick off with a vision for Victoria Park yesterday. "And I think it's time we stopped pretending and we're a little honest with our fans and our city on that fact". After cost concerns over that project arose, discussions eventually shifted to constructing a new venue in Victoria Park, though the Flames and the city have been unable to come to terms on an agreement.

"This is a franchise, this is an arena that can't compete with, for example, Edmonton anymore".

The team doesn't have a ton of leverage if it's not willing to move, so this stance from King mainly turns the heat on city officials who thus far have refused to acquiesce to the Flames' requests for public funding. "It's certainly not an election issue for us", King said. "I don't know why they came to this conclusion".

"We maintain this building pretty well, so we're going to make sure it's safe, we're going to make sure it's secure, but unfortunately it won't be as heavily populated with some of the events we would normally wish to have here", King said. "We haven't concluded our discussions".

"We'll have some events and we'll have some concerts, we'll have some junior hockey games, some lacrosse games, and we'll have some community events and we'll do our damnedest try and win a Stanley Cup".

The NHL may be welcoming a new team in the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18, but the headlines say there's just as much, if not more, talk about the teams that could be looking for new homes beyond this season.

I'd like the commissioner to stay out of it but there he is, saying there will be consequences if the Flames can't get a new building.
