Gas deliveries to increase with reopening of Port Everglades expected Tuesday

Gas deliveries to increase with reopening of Port Everglades expected Tuesday”

A half-dozen major ports, including facilities in Tampa, Miami and Savannah, suspended operations over the weekend.

Monday, however, dozens of tanker trucks were loaded with fuel that was stored at the port, and the process is continuing.

Things were more tentative at Jaxport in Jacksonville where the US Coast Guard (USCG) was still inspecting the condition of the harbour and port facilities. All of the ports offices and terminals were still closed as of Tuesday. Governor Rick Scott emphasized Tuesday morning that tanker trucks are loading from storage tanks at Port Tampa Bay and Port Everglades, even though tanker vessels have not been able to enter yet to replenish the ports' supplies.

Hurricane straps installed on empty containers and ship-to-shore cranes prevented any damage to cargo, cranes or other infrastructure.

He said another five are expected to be up and running by noon.

Mr. Lynch said the port facilities sustained no major damage or flooding, despite very high water levels and winds that reached up to 60 miles an hour. Lynch said, adding that the port can handle about eight or nine ships at a time.

Port Tampa Bay expects to reopen at 2 pm Tuesday (1800 GMT), spokeswoman Samara Sodos said. Ten fuel vessels are set to arrive within 48 hours and have been given top priority by state officials for docking at the port.

Port Everglades, which handles fuel shipments for 12 Florida counties and several worldwide airports, said in a statement that it has reopened to commercial traffic during daylight hours only, with no draft restrictions. Amid reports of fuel shortages across the state, diesel prices in Florida have gone up 7 cents a gallon over the past week, according to AAA.

Operations were shutdown and vessel traffic halted Friday night as Hurricane Irma approached the bay area.
