Gio Gonzalez has tough night in loss to Braves

Gio Gonzalez has tough night in loss to Braves”

The following month, he inked a five-year, $42 million contract extension that included club options for the 2017 and 2018 season. The 26-year-old is 7-2 with a 3.09 ERA on the road, and in three starts against Washington this season is 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA.

After that lucrative beginning, Gonzalez's outing went downhill. The big blow came in the form of a three-run homer by Freddie Freeman in the third inning.

This continues his best season in a Nationals uniform, as he entered Tuesday night with a 14-6 record and an ERA of 2.50.

Compared to what his rotation mates Max Scherzer ($22.1 million) and even Steven Strasburg to a lesser degree ($15 million) will make next year, Gonzalez should again be a nice bargain for the Nationals at $12 million. By hitting the 180-inning mark, Gonzalez formally removed any doubt about his contact status, automatically insuring that he'll spend a seventh season in DC.

Teheran has reached double-figures in wins for the fourth time in five seasons, but his ERA is more than a run and a half higher than last season while allowing a career-high 30 homers. That's the epitome of a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter, and Gonzalez is also the lone left-hander in Washington's starting rotation.
