Hurricane Irma: Damage mapped

Hurricane Irma: Damage mapped”

The storm ripped roofs off homes, collapsed buildings and caused floods along hundreds of miles of coast after cutting a trail of destruction across the Caribbean. As a coral island just a few feet above sea level, Barbuda had few natural barriers to break the impact of the winds. And more than 20 people have been killed.

Associated Press writer Andrea Rodriguez reported this story in Havana and AP writer Desmond Boylan reported from Caibarien, Cuba.

"We have enough fresh water for all of us to survive for two weeks, if we ration", Catherine Clayton, whose family owns an eight-room hotel in Josiah's Bay, a relatively remote corner of the largest BVI island Tortola, told the New York Times. The U.S. embassy was pretty badly flooded and its fence was pushed over.

Meanwhile, as dusk fell Saturday in Havana, the churning waters moved inland from the city's popular seafront boulevard. Do you know anything about that?

There also was widespread damage to Varadero, Cuba's main beach resort for foreigners. "All of us have been affected by Irma, and some more than others", Gus Jaspert, governor of the British Virgin Islands, said Thursday.

Irma left a string of small Caribbean islands devastated, many of which are still assessing damage as they prepare for Hurricane Jose. Join us in a conversation about world events, the newsgathering process or whatever aspect of the news universe you find interesting or important.

Four storm-related deaths were reported in the U.S. Virgin Islands. And the French and Dutch and USA governments that have jurisdiction there have been trying to send in aid and law enforcement, but things are still very bad in all those places.

"I want to make sure it's not a one-ditch effort", said Duncan, who lived his first 18 years on St. Croix before moving to North Carolina to attend college at Wake Forest.

WEISSENSTEIN: Evacuation has begun.

The US and British Virgin Islands were also pummeled by Irma. And there's even a cruise ship headed to St. Thomas, I believe, to take even more people off. "When I got to this neighborhood, I cried".

- United States: The US Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) reports that 586 shelters are housing 192,000 people in Florida and 92 shelters are housing more than 7,000 people in Georgia.

The tiny island of Barbuda was perhaps worst hit.

WEISSENSTEIN: St. Martin is really the one where I think the situation is the most bad.

This photo provided by the Dutch Defence Ministry shows a human chain of residents passing supplies provided by a Dutch soldier after Hurricane Irma roared through St. Maarten (the Dutch side of Saint Martin). It seems as - Jose is still out there.

WEISSENSTEIN: There was a lot of fear about a one-two punch from Irma and Jose.

To the east, in the Leeward Islands known as the playground for the rich and famous, many criticized governments for failing to respond quickly to the hurricane, which flattered many towns and stripped the lush green hills to a brown stubble. But this sort of second round of devastation hasn't materialized. He's Caribbean bureau chief for The Associated Press.
