Hurricane Irma's storm path: What you should know

Hurricane Irma's storm path: What you should know”

Areas of Mexico to the north of Cabo Rojo and to the south of Laguna Verde are under a tropical-storm warning.

On Sept. 7 at 12:45 p.m. EDT (1645 UTC) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite captured a visible-light image of Hurricane Jose approaching the Leeward Islands. Saba and St. Eustatius are also under a Tropical Storm Watch.

At the same time, Hurricane Jose is spinning just behind Irma about 1,060 kilometres east of the Lesser Antilles. A slower west-northwestward motion is expected during the next couple of days.

Jose was upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday afternoon.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station have a rare seat to view some of the earth's most awe-inspiring sights and some of the most devastating natural disasters that have occurred - that includes Hurricane Irma.

Hurricane watches have been issued along portions of the Mexican coast.

Hurricane Jose continues to strengthen, moving west-northwest at around 17 miles per hour. Rough conditions persist over Florida as Irma's outer bands pass into Georgia, where the storm's center is expected to arrive later in the day. It has maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour are moving in a north-northwest direction at 17mph. The storm is expected to strengthen during the next 48 hours.

Three hurricanes are in the Atlantic simultaneously: Katia, Jose, and Irma. Though it's unusual for three hurricanes to be active in the Atlantic basin at the same time, it isn't without precedent.

At this time, Jose is not expected to follow the same path as Irma.

And more than 120 homes were being evacuated early Monday in Orange County, the region where the city of Orlando is located, as floodwaters started to rise.

This is the first time on record that the Atlantic has had two hurricanes with winds of more than 150 miles per hour at the same time, Colorado State University meteorologist Philip Klotzbach said. It's not close enough to cause direct destruction, but close enough to potentially bring another round of wind and rain to the ravaged islands.
