Hydro One crews to help Florida in wake of Irma

Hydro One crews to help Florida in wake of Irma”

Cherie Jacobs, a spokeswoman for Tampa Electric, a unit of Emera Inc., said her company was in much the same mode.

Irma has knocked out power to 6.5 million Florida electricity customers, or almost two-thirds of the state, since making landfall this weekend. That's 64 percent of the state's power customers, and there are several counties where 80-90 percent of customers are without power.

Many customers already have their power back on, but more are waiting to get their AC blowing again.

Customers on Florida's east coast, which sustained far less wind damage, should all have power by the end of the weekend, he said.

"'Restore" may not capture the full sense of where we are.

Under the agreement, Florida officials are covering the cost of the California crews.

As the storm moved to Atlanta Monday, it caused outages for more than a million customers across Georgia.

The company, which serves about 10 million power customers across almost half of Florida, may have to physically rebuild parts of the power system, Gould said.

A series of explosions and meltdowns occurred at the Fukushima nuclear plant after a massive natural disaster unleashed a powerful tsunami that shut the facility's cooling systems and led to meltdowns. He continued to warn that many could be without power for weeks.

"This is not a typical restoration that you're going to see".

"It's supposed to get really bad here in the next couple of hours, and after that we'll make a decision of where we need to get on the road", he said. FPL prioritizes returning power to those critical facilities. The electricity company would then turn its attention to areas that are home to supermarkets, gas stations and other community services. Crews from the South came to this region when the derecho hit in 2012 and during the paralyzing snow storm in the eastern part of the state, he said.

The company will adjust the plans as necessary, "depending upon the path of the storm", Gould said.

But Gould said those outage numbers will soon start to shrink.

A 24-man crew from the Monongahela Power Co. with workers from Parkersburg, Sistersville and Harrisville is on its way to Sarasota, Fla., to help restore power to Floridians cleaning up from Hurricane Irma, a company spokesman said. "It's not over. We still have customers in north Florida that are losing power because of the storm". He said the company would continue to build out that capability in the future.

Workers left last Thursday and arrived in Florida on Saturday.

"At this time we do not know the exact restoration times".
