IOC officially announces Paris, Los Angeles as Olympic hosts”

The International Olympic Committee has chosen Paris to host the 2024 summer games and Los Angeles to host the following 2028 summer games.

In L.A., the torch above the peristyle of the Coliseum was lighted in celebration, and in Lima, Peru, the L.A. delegation presented their plan for the Games.

With the two teams - the final contestants of an initial six-strong field - having already agreed to split the 2024 and 2028 games, there was none of the usual pre-announcement nerves and tension.

The Paris Games will come on the 100th anniversary of its last games - a milestone that would have made the French capital the sentimental favorite had only 2024 been up for grabs.

It's officially official: Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympic games.

Mayor Eric Garcetti argued in July that the longer wait would be worth it for Los Angeles.

The Californian city wanted the earlier Games because of its readiness to host while Paris said its prospective site for the Games would not be available for redevelopment after 2024.

Both campaign teams summarized their bids in presentations at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, before the IOC voted to formally confirm the announcements. The two cities were selected following a unanimous vote.

The 2020 edition will take place in Tokyo.
