Ireland-West Indies ODI washed out

Ireland-West Indies ODI washed out”

That may well be the case today, with heavy rain on Tuesday and forecast for overnight set to leave groundstaff in a race against time to get play underway by 10.15.

Spectators shelter from the rain under an umbrella as they await the result of a pitch inspectation at Stormont.

For the tourists, it was hardly the ideal preparation ahead of their Twenty20 against England on Saturday, before a five-match ODI series with Eoin Morgan's men.

"If we wanted to start the game, we could have had a captain's agreement with William Porterfield telling the Windies that the home side would agree to bowl first to allay any fears the West Indies may have had about the soggy outfield".

The ODI is part of an arrangement via which England, or the worldwide team touring that country during the summer, plays a short number of limited-overs matches in nearby Ireland.

West Indies may be struggling to challenge big teams in big formats, but if there is one form of cricket one can arguably say it can put up a strong fight in, it is ODI cricket.

The game was Ireland's much-anticipated first ODi as a full member nation after that status was granted in June.

"The surface was greasy and it would have been hard to get out there".

West Indies captain Jason Holder said that he was also "disappointed" to miss out on match practice for the upcoming white-ball games against England.
