Israeli court annuls law exempting religious from military”

Israel's Supreme Court on Tuesday annulled a 2015 law exempting ultra-Orthodox Jewish seminary students from military conscription.

The legislation was an amendment to the Equal Service Law, which superseded and weakened a law supported by Yesh Atid that would have required more Charedi men to do their mandatory military service. But because they vote, vote as a bloc and vote as instructed to by their religious leaders, they have historically been able to parlay their numbers into political patronage, privilege and most upsetting to other Israelis, vast sums of public funding.

The court provided the government with one year to address the issue. Every young person who reaches the age of 18 must serve in the military or do national service.

The ultra-Orthodox, known as the Haredim, make up about 10 per cent of Israel's nine million citizens and receive subsidies for studying the Torah instead of working.

After canceling the Tal Law, which enabled the exemption of military service to yeshiva students, the government passed the new Recruitment Law in 2014.

Interior Minister Aryeh Deri of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party accused the Supreme Court of being disconnected from the Jewish people, adding that the decision was "completely detached from our heritage and tradition and from the people". According to the Supreme Court, the amendment to the legislation made by the Haredi parties is "disproportionate and unconstitutional". "This is why we have come to politics". Conscription for everybody, work for everybody.

"Prime Minister Netanyahu can't continue to avoid a decision; the IDF draft is for everyone. Everyone. Not just for suckers who don't have a party in the coalition", Lapid said.
