Lightning, Thunderstorms Strike Parts of the Bay Area

Lightning, Thunderstorms Strike Parts of the Bay Area”

On Monday, the Bay Area saw around 1,200 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and about 7,000 total flashes of lightning, according to Weather Service officials.

Tuesday's storms were expected to reach the Central Coast first and then head north, National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Rowe said. Most blazes were quickly contained, but crews were still fighting at least one in a wooded area near the town of Woodside in San Mateo County. Statewide, there were 6,700 lightning strikes detected.

Scattered showers and lightning Monday evening stalled the start of the Giants game at San Francisco's AT&T Park for almost three hours. Weather service officials said on social media this morning that about 1,200 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes occurred and almost 7,000 total flashes were recorded Monday for the entire Bay Area.

"Area residents can also expect brief but heavy rain, gusty winds and cloud to ground lightning", according to Bay City News, "which could increase the potential for additional fire".

Four lightning strikes were reported to have hit that area at about 5 p.m., causing the fires, Cal Fire officials said.

A moderate risk of severe weather will continue into Wednesday morning for Monterey County and San Benito County.
