Malta records highest employment growth among European Union in Q2

Compared with the same quarter of the previous year, employment increased by 1.6%. Compared with the second quarter of previous year it rose 1.6% in the eurozone and 1.5% across the European Union as a whole, Eurostat said in a statement.

According to Eurostat figures, 235.4 million men and women were employed in the EU28 in the second quarter of 2017, 155.6 million of those in the EA19.

In contrast, decreases in employment were observed in Croatia (-0.8%), Latvia (-0.7%), Romania (-0.6%) and Estonia (-0.5%). Job growth was strongest in Malta, at 1%.

Eurostat said in a separate statement that industrial production rose 0.1% in the eurozone in July compared with June.

Euro zone industrial production rebounded slightly in July after a steep fall in June, driven mostly by corporate investment and durable consumer goods, official data released on Wednesday showed.

On a yearly basis, growth in industrial output accelerated to 3.2 percent from 2.8 percent in June.
