Mark Ronson Sued For Copying "Uptown Funk" From Zapp

Mark Ronson Sued For Copying

It's the same old song.

Mark Ronson is being sued for allegedly ripping of 1980 classic More Bounce To The Ounce.

Lastrada is suing Ronson, Sony, Spotify, Apple and several producers to shut down future plays and sales of "Uptown Funk,". plus an unspecified amount in damages.

"Uptown Funk" has been incredibly successful. moving more than 11 million units since its release.

The drama comes less than a year after Ronson was sued for infringing on the 1983 hit "Young Girls" by Collage, while the production team also fended off legal action by The Gap Band by crediting its members for the similarities to their "79 hit 'Oops Up Side Your Head".

Mars was not included in the lawsuit. Court documents claim that Ronson has previously cited Roger and Zapp as influences on his music.

Back in 2016, funk group Collage took legal action after alleging that Uptown Funk bore similarities to their 1983 single Young Girls, thanks to "the distinct funky specifically noted and timed consistent guitar riffs present throughout the compositions, virtually if not identical bass notes and sequence, rhythm, structure, crescendo of horns and synthesizers rendering the compositions nearly indistinguishable". That lawsuit claimed that modern hit-makers used the same rhythm, structure and "crescendo of horns and synthesizers" from their song to create "Uptown Funk".

Another funk group, The Sequence, has also claimed that "Uptown Funk" uses elements of their 1979 song "Funk You Up", though they do not appear to have ever filed a lawsuit.

IBTimes UK has reached out to Ronson's representatives for comment.
