National MP: I taught Chinese spies

National MP: I taught Chinese spies”

Mr Yang says he refutes any suggestion he is not loyal to New Zealand.

Asked by one journalist: "So just to be clear, are you a spy, have you ever been a spy?"

Dr Yang said he taught nothing else at the Chinese universities where he worked, other than English and American studies. He said some of his students were trained to collect, monitor and interpret information.

National Party MP Dr Jian Yang today admitted that he had taught Chinese spies at a military intelligence school in China.

"If you define those cadets as spies then I was teaching spies yes", he said.

"I say that because a Labour source leaked knowledge of Mr Yang's background to me, unaware that I already knew", says Mr Peters.

A China-born New Zealand lawmaker has been investigated by New Zealand's national intelligence agency for his connection with leading Chinese military colleges. He said he'd been upfront and transparent about his education and employment and was the victim of a smear campaign 10 days before a general election.

"The National Party either spectacularly failed to check out this candidate, or were totally naïve about what his background meant". He served on New Zealand's parliamentary select committee for foreign affairs, defence and trade from October 2014 until he was replaced in March 2016, according to the Financial Times.

Dr Yang was an undergraduate majoring in English language at China's People's Liberation Army Air Force Engineering Academy in 1978, according to the Financial Times.

Mr English said he had been aware "from early on" that Dr Yang had had "military training, including military intelligence".

"But once they understand the system, they should be assured that this is nothing, really, you should be concerned about".

"This is a New Zealand citizen". It has become a key export market for New Zealand's milk and agricultural products and also contributes to New Zealand's growing tourism industry.
