Poundland hit with backlash over sale of 'offensive' candies”

Poundland has been criticised for releasing a new range of candies called "Nutters" amid concerns that they will deemed as offensive to people suffering with mental health problems.

Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb, whose 29-year-old son Archie has suffered from mental health issues, said the word nutter is "pejorative" and "not the sort of expression we should be using these days".

Dr Sophie Dix, of charity MQ: Transforming Mental Health, told The Sun: 'Such offensive language and distressing imagery is a real step backwards'.

Poundland was criticised today by North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb, for selling chocolates similar to M&Ms called Nutters.

Lamb called the candies, which are on sale in the chain's 896 stores, "unbelievably stupid".

"The product needs to be quickly withdrawn from sale and Poundland needs to apologise".

Speaking to HuffPost UK, Cal Strode, a spokesperson for the Mental Health Foundation agreed that "Poundland made a mistake" in putting the product on sale.

"If you just say nothing and just allow these products to be normal practice, it perpetuates a negative view of mental health - that there's something weird and odd about you".

Despite the criticism, Poundland said it has stocked the chocolates for the past 12 months and their popularity suggests they haven't caused offense to customers.

"We've come a long way in challenging everyday mental health stigma, companies have played a positive part in this, and so it's important not to undo any of this work by perpetuating exhausted stereotypes just to market a product".

"We take all feedback on board and have committed to assessing this line at its next formal review".
