Puppies from Petland Sicken 39 People — CDC”

SLU Care infectious diseases specialist Dr. Nirav Patel at SSM Health SLU Hospital says it's largely associated with unpasteurized foods, chicken, poultry and other animals, in this case dogs.

39-people have fallen ill in seven states since last September, including in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin. Al of the cases are linked to puppies sold through the retail chain 'Petland.' Patients are either Petland employees or customers who recently visited a Petland or bought a puppy there. The other 27 people had either recently purchased a puppy from Petland, visited a store, or had come into contact with a Petland puppy. There have been nine hospitalizations and no deaths reported.

The illnesses started from September 15, 2016 to August 12, 2017, with the most recent illness reported on September 1, 2017.

People sickened in the current outbreak range in age from younger than 1 year to 64 years old.

"In particular puppies that are at a particular retailer, Petland".

Petland is cooperating with officials in the investigation. The CDC reports that more laboratory results regarding individuals and dogs are "pending". "Today the CDC posted an update of 39 cases of humans with Campylobacter". The company says that accordance with the CDC's advice, they will continue their efforts to encourage handwashing after contact with puppies.

According to the CDC campylo-bacteriosis can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain and fever for up to a week.

Kunzelman added that Petland has many sanitation stations in each store and has strict kennel sanitation procedures and protocols put in place by consulting veterinarians. The CDC is urging pet owners, pet store workers, and veterinarians to be aware that any puppies and dogs could potentially carry these harmful bacteria.

For every 100,000 people, 14 cases of Campylobacter infection are diagnosed each year.
