Putin, Merkel seek peaceful solutions to Korean Peninsula issue”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is ready to intervene directly in a diplomatic initiative to end the nuclear and missile program of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a German newspaper reported Sunday.

"There was agreement that the conflict about North Korea's nuclear armament must be resolved peacefully", German government spokesman Steffen Seibert said in a statement.

Europe should stand united in trying to bring about a diplomatic solution and "do everything that can be done in terms of sanctions", she said.

The chancellor now has a strong lead in opinion polls, and if re-elected on September 24, it will be her fourth term.

According to the newspaper, she will speak by telephone with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday.

In office, he has talked about not recertifying Iran's compliance.

She's correct that this would be the same situation that led to talks with Iran. US President Donald Trump, in particular, stated that Washington considers the possibility of complete break of trade ties with those states that have business dealings with North Korea. It's repeated like a mantra, with no proof and no logical reason given for that kind of optimism.

The actions by North Korea have antagonized the United States and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Associated Press reports U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said North Korea and Kim Jong Un's actions in 2017 have shown they are "begging for war". You wouldn't give a 5 year old a loaded pistol. North Korea fired a missile created to carry a nuclear payload in what was likely the longest ever launch for the country.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been called calculating and warm, a pragmatist and an idealist.

British Prime Minister Theresa May answered a similar question before a snap election in June, in which she lost her parliamentary majority, by saying she ran through fields of wheat as a girl - prompting a wealth of social media ridicule.

But to the rest of us, she looks like a dangerously naive and ignorant politician.

A Merkel ally, who is running for Parliament in Berlin, made the decision to feature Obama in the German election campaign.

Merkel said she thought the only way to deal with North Korea's nuclear program was to come to a diplomatic solution.
