Recalled Volkswagens stolen from parking lot in MI

Authorities in MI and Kentucky notified officials in Indiana about the ongoing theft ring, and the Indiana State Police have recovered 22 of the stolen cars, with 12 coming from an auto auction in Clarksville, Indiana. Jerry Goodin says the Volkswagen cars were part of a recall due to emissions issues and were being held at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac when they were stolen.

A dozen of the cars were found at an auction lot in Clarksville, Ind. He said the recovered vehicles will be returned to Volkswagen and shipped to lots at the company's direction.

If you've recently bought a used diesel Volkswagen, the first thing you can do is check at safercar.gov to see if its been recalled, then call up the sheriff's office or wherever you got your auto to see if the title is legitimate.

One auction company told WDRB.com they purchased Audis and Volkswagens from a MI used auto supplier for $10,000 each and were selling them for $18,000.

According to local police, as many as 69 Dieselgate buyback vehicles have been reported missing from the Silverdome.

MLive couldn't immediately reach Michigan State Police or Oakland County deputies for comment Wednesday. The eerie sight of the lot is jam-packed with rows of seemingly brand new cars, all of which were affected by the fallout of one of the largest automotive scandals in history.

For almost 10 years Volkswagen implemented software specifically created to cheat US emissions tests in almost 600,000 Volkswagen "clean diesel" vehicles.
