Soyuz spacecraft lifts new crew to space station

Soyuz spacecraft lifts new crew to space station”

A Russian carrier rocket with the Soyuz MS-06 manned spacecraft was launched from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan to deliver the crew to the International Space Station.

The spacecraft, carrying Russia's Aleksandr Misurkin, and NASA's Mark Vande Hei and Joseph Acaba, has been successfully put into the designated orbit.

A spacewalk, aimed at improving communications in the Russian segment of the ISS, is also part of the program.

The spaceship is scheduled to dock to the International Space Station at 10:57pm EDT, where the three new members will join Expedition 53 commander NASA's Randy Bresnik, cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy and Paolo Nespoli from the European Space Agency.

They are due to arrive at the Space Station by mid-morning on Wednesday but should the fast-track approach fails, the Soyuz will take two days to reach the ISS. Two of those crew members who will be spending five months onboard are NASA astronauts.
